Heera Mandi By Sanjay Leela Bhansali ( Movies of 2024)

The series revolves around the experiences of courtesans in the bustling red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore during the Indian independence movement against British rule. Its cast includes Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Sharmin Segal.

Heeramandi is a renowned locality and market situated within the historic Walled City of Lahore famously recognized as the city’s red-light district. During the Mughal era, Heeramandi flourished as a vibrant community centred around the Tawaif song and dance culture. However, it transitioned into a red-light district during the period of British colonization. The area's establishment is credited to Hira Singh Dogra, who served as the prime minister of Punjab under the reign of Sher-e-Punjab, Ranjit Singh. Singh envisioned Heeramandi not only as a residence for Tawaifs but also as an economic centre within the Shahi Mohallas at the heart of the city. Consequently, he initiated the development of a grains market in the vicinity, commonly referred to as ‘Hira Singh di Mandi’. The term "heera," meaning diamond in Urdu, is believed to symbolize the esteemed status of the area's dancing girls.

During the Mughal era, women predominantly originated from Afghanistan and Uzbekistan to entertain the royal court and the Emperor. Their attendants and servants inhabited an area south of the Lahore Fort, forming what became known as the “Shahi Mohalla” or “Royal Neighbourhood.” Over time, this locality also became a residence for Tawaifs during the 15th and 16th centuries. These Tawaifs showcased Indian classical dance forms like Kathak and mujra for their audiences, alongside reciting poetry, often under the tutelage of skilled art teachers or ustads. However, the arrival of British colonial rule marked a significant shift.

Under British governance, Heera Mandi underwent a transformation into a renowned centre for prostitution. The clientele shifted from emperors and nobles to affluent individuals from the city. This period saw the district acquiring the moniker “Bazaar-e-Husn” (Market of Beauty). Brothel houses were subsequently established in the old Anarkali Bazaar, Lohari Gate, and later Taxali Gate by the British, catering to the recreational needs of their soldiers during the British Raj.

Numerous young and alluring Tawaifs hailing from Heeramandi found themselves drawn into the Pakistani film industry by local filmmakers. They became integral parts of Lollywood, attaining both fame and fortune. This influx of talent led to the establishment of dance and music studios within Heeramandi. However, a portion of these individuals eventually returned to engage in prostitution within the district.

During his presidency from 1978 to 1988, President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq initiated an operation targeting the music and dance establishments, which were purportedly hubs of prostitution. Consequently, prostitution was banned in Heeramandi, prompting a shift in the area's landscape. This transition witnessed the emergence of food streets, restaurants, and shops.

The narratives of these courtesans are set to be portrayed in the upcoming Netflix series, "Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar," helmed by acclaimed director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
